Nanjing kindergarten serves leftover meals to kids

A private kindergarten in Nanjing, the capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, was suspected of skimping on children's daily meals and online photos of its meals have enraged many parents.

A blog on Xici.net showed 60 snapshots of meals served at Wang Ping Kids' Garden, which fed children porridge made from leftovers, Yangtze Evening News reported today.

The soups look watery and only a tiny portion of vegetables could be seen as children's main dish. "The so-called 'eight-treasure' porridge turned out to be made from leftovers," the blogger wrote.

The kindergarten charged a high tuition of 1,400 yuan a month plus a meal cost of 5 yuan a day. It published its daily menu which didn't match what the kids actually ate.

One grandparent surnamed Lan said the menu indicated stewed beef was served for lunch one day, but her grandson said he never saw beef.

Local education authority promised to investigate the allegations. He Wei, an official with the Gulou District Education Bureau, said they would report their investigation results in September.

He said the kindergarten was previously accused of overcharging.
