Nanjing motorists irate over pothole-plagued bridge

MORE than 100 potholes have appeared on Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, in east China's Jiangsu Province, after a heavy rainstorm and because of poor maintenance, Yangtze Evening News reported today.

Drivers in Nanjing have been annoyed by the newly-formed holes. Some residents said that water always failed to drain from the road after the rainfall and this caused potholes on the road. According to an investigation, there are 117 potholes along the bridge and the biggest one is up to 20 centimeters in diameter and 7 centimeters in depth.

Many drivers had to slow down to avoid the potential hazards. "The bridge is very busy during rush hours. We cannot keep away from the potholes. I'm afraid to that my car will get a flat tire after driving through so many large holes," a driver complained to the newspaper.

The bridge has been repaired every year, but the problems have not stopped. An insider said the design capacity of the bridge was 10,000 vehicles every day, but the real flow was now nearly 100,000 vehicles every day, which may aggravate the damage.

An officer surnamed Liu who is in charge of the bridge's maintenance told the newspaper that the bridge needed to undergo thorough maintenance with sufficient time and should not only be repaired once potholes formed.
