Nanjing police criticized for 'microblog violence'
POLICE in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province published the mug shots of three pickpockets whose eyes were covered by the image of Chinese kids' favorite cartoon character Grey Wolf. But this still drew criticism for invasion of privacy, a local tabloid reported today.
The Yangtze Evening News said the photos appeared on China's Twitter-like website, weibo.com, on Tuesday. The offenders' faces were initially covered by the image of Smurf, but police later "apologized" for "masking their faces too much" and changed photos so people could see more of their faces.
These thieves were arrested for stealing on buses. More than 500 people forwarded their photos on weibo.com. Yao Chen, a Chinese actress with over 10 million online followers, tweeted: "I knew them. They are bad guys in the Grey Wolf family."
But Nanjing police were criticized for ignoring the feelings of the offenders and their families. One netizen known as sai1000 said what Nanjing police did was an act of "microblog violence."
It is a vogue for Chinese police units to use popular web slang and funny pictures in their official microblogs, however their endearing efforts sometimes backfire.
