Nanny detained for using poppy to sedate baby
A nanny put poppy straw in the soup of a young mother to make her baby sleep more after drinking the mother's milk, police in Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province said yesterday.
Police said the woman surnamed Wu had been held for investigation after an online post revealed that the young mother found remnants of poppy stems in her fish soup and asked Wu about it. But Wu said it was just a seasoning ingredient and swallowed it.
The young mother felt doubt because her family has no such seasoning. Days later, they found a package of poppy straw in Wu's bag and immediately alerted the police.
Wu confessed that poppy straw, fed through mother's milk, can induce longer sleep in baby and make her work much easier. What's more, food cooked with poppy straw tastes better.
Zhou Peng, a pharmacist at Taizhou Hospital, said poppy straw contains morphine which is banned for use on pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
Morphine can be addictive for infants and cause symptoms like distraction, drowsiness, and neonatal respiratory depression, Zhou added.
