An underground network of workshops that made and sold counterfeit sanitary napkins worth more than 150 million yuan (US$23.6 million) has been destroyed in a joint crackdown.
Forty-one suspects, including their ringleader, were caught in 17 provinces including Zhejiang, Hunan, Guangdong and Fujian as police raided their workshops, warehouses and homes.
Police also confiscated their production equipment, five vehicles and 26 million pieces of fake napkins labeled Whisper and Sofy, the media reported.
A villager in Xianju County of Zhejiang Province reported to the police that she suffered infection from sanitary napkins she bought from a convenience store. Police then seized a van that delivered the napkins to the store.
Through questioning, police tracked down on the ringleader surnamed Fang in Hunan Province. Fang confessed they had sold 30 million packs since August 2008, mostly to small stores in rural areas.
