Nation sees increasing number of graduates

China had 2,596 universities and colleges by the end of 2016, according to a Ministry of Education report, and 4.05 million students were admitted to undergraduate programs that year.

Between 2005 and 2015, 28.53 million people graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree. Among those who obtained jobs in urban areas in 2015, those with bachelor鈥檚 degrees accounted for 47.2 percent, 25 percentage points higher than 2005.

鈥淭hose with bachelor鈥檚 degrees constitute the most important engine of the country鈥檚 newly increased human resources who support the country鈥檚 social development and economic drive,鈥 the report said.

The number of staff also rose 鈥 from 1.065 million in 1995 to 2.369 million in 2015.

鈥淭he development of top-tier undergraduate education is well underway, while we should not overlook the people鈥檚 demand for a higher-quality education and unbalanced educational resources in different regions,鈥 a ministry official said.

As of May 2016, China had 417 private universities, the report said, with those institutions now an important part of the higher education system.

Increased investment in them had improved their educational quality, the report said, but problems still exist.

Private universities have seen dropping enrollments and they lack leading faculty and systematic planning, the official said.
