National parks plan to protect pandas
Three cities in southwest China鈥檚 Sichuan Province are planning national parks to better protect the endangered giant panda 鈥 Ya鈥檃n, Mianyang and Chengdu, the provincial capital.
鈥淚t is highly possible for all three cities to gain approval, possibly at the same time,鈥 said Yao Sidan, director of the Sichuan provincial forestry ministry. 鈥淏uilding national parks will help break administrative barriers and create a better environment for pandas,鈥 Yao said.
Specific plans will be made ready in early 2016 and submitted for approval by the State Forestry Administration, Yao said.
Only 1,864 giant pandas live in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and northwest China鈥檚 Shaanxi Province.
