National skating team attacked by guards in Yunnan

AT least ten athletes and coaches of the National Speed Skating Team were injured earlier today when they were attacked by some unknown people in Lijiang City in southwest Yunnan Province. One of them was seriously wounded.

The team was returning to their hotel in Chamagu Town after a late dinner when they were assaulted. One male athlete suffered serious contusion and was still in hospital for treatment. The team members said the attackers might be local security guards, according to a report on sports.qq.com.

The report said the team was assaulted by 20-30 strangers in uniforms and armed with batons. "We just finished dinner and were on the way back to the hotel when they charged at us and beat us with batons," one victim said.

Some athletes tried to stop them but it was useless. It is reported that people are forbidden to walk in the street after 11pm in Chamagu Town. When the skating team returned to the hotel it was already 12:45am and this could be the cause of the conflict.
