Naval review to mark anniversary

CHINA will hold a naval review in April off the coast of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, a Beijing-based newspaper reported today.

Three Chinese warships now on an escort mission in Somalia will return to China on March 25 and will be a highlight of the review, Wang Fushan, deputy commander-in-chief of the North Sea Fleet, said yesterday in Beijing.


The People's Liberation Army Navy was founded on April 23, 1949, and this year's review will mark the 60th anniversary of the founding.

Two Chinese naval ships took part in a fleet review held by the Republic of Korea on October 12 to celebrate the establishment of that country's navy. Twenty-four ships from 12 countries, including Russia and the United States, participated in the review at Busan.

Two PLA Navy missile destroyers and a supply vessel set off on December 26 for an anti-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia. It was the first time China had dispatched warships for such a mission so far from home.

China's military dress parade in Tian'anmen Square on October 1 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China will bring joy to the people despite having a prudent budget because of the global financial crisis, Zhang Li, deputy chief of staff of People's Liberation Army, said yesterday.
