Navy in live-ammunition drills
CHINA'S navy is to stage live-ammunition drills in the Yellow Sea this week.
The Beihai Fleet of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy will conduct exercises from Wednesday to Saturday in the sea off the southeast coast of Qingdao City, where the fleet is headquartered, the Ministry of National Defense announced yesterday.
The drills are routine, annual training mostly involving the shooting of shipboard artillery, the ministry said.
The United States has said it will conduct an anti-submarine warfare exercise with South Korea in the Yellow Sea in early September, although no dates have been announced.
That is intended to send a warning to North Korea that Washington is committed to defending South Korea, the Pentagon said earlier this month.
The US and South Korea have accused North Korea of torpedoing a South Korean naval ship in March, killing 46 sailors.
North Korea has denied the allegation.
Last month, the US and South Korea held a naval drill in the Sea of Japan off the Korean Peninsula, prompting condemnation from China.
The July drill was initially scheduled to take place in the Yellow Sea, but was moved to the other side of the Korean Peninsula after objections from China.
China has said the US-South Korea military exercises in the region would be unduly provocative at a time of volatile tensions over North Korea.
Chinese Rear Admiral Yang Yi also said that those exercises would be provocatively close to north China's political and economic heartland.
The People's Liberation Army Daily said in an editorial condemning the upcoming exercises signed by Major General Luo Yuan: "If no one harms me, I harm no one, but if someone harms me, I must harm them."
Earlier this month, China lashed out at a Pentagon report accusing its military of excessive secrecy and warned that the report could further damage ties between their armed forces.
In January, China suspended contacts with the US military as retaliation for a US$6.4 billion arms sale to Taiwan.
