Needle attacker seized

POLICE in northwestern China have taken an alleged needle attacker into custody and asked the city's prosecutors for permission to arrest him yesterday.

Wang Xing, the 26-year-old Han suspect, allegedly stabbed a university student with a bamboo stick on the street of Shaanxi's capital, Xi'an, on September 12.

The city's public security authority said Wang confessed to the crime, according to the Xi?an Evening News. The report did not say what was Wang?s aim.

Syringe attacks have terrorized the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and raised enormous safety concerns.

The city government deployed more than 2,400 plainclothes police officers and 30,000 army reservists to the streets and bus stops where people are easily exposed to attack.

Several such syringe-scare cases were reported to the city police yet medical examination found no injuries on the claimed victims. Xi'an police offered up to 50,000 yuan rewards for information on attackers.
