Neglectful sons get jail
THREE brothers in Beijing were sentenced to up to three years in jail for abandoning their 80-year-old mother, who later starved to death, a court has ruled.
But the three men, who received jail terms from two to three years, said they all will challenge the abandonment conviction delivered by the court in Tongzhou District and denied they have any responsibility for the death of their mother, reported yesterday's Beijing News.
The body of the mother was found at her home when a family member paid a visit to her in April last year.
Police believed she had been dead at least 10 days.
The woman, who lived on her own, was found lying on a dusty ground, emaciated and skinny. Autopsy found she had nothing in her stomach and determined her death was caused by organ failure from serious malnutrition, the report said.
Chai had five sons with the eldest aged 65. After her youngest son, her sole caregiver, died of alcoholic intoxication in 2007, Chai lived alone and was rarely visited by her other four sons.
The relationship between the four sons was described as "terrible" by the neighbors and disputes over the responsibility of taking care of Chai often broke out among them.
