Net result: Sites for gambling shut down

AN online gambling ring in Shanghai's neighboring Jiangsu Province that turned over an astonishing 5 billion yuan (US$732 million) in just two years has had its plug pulled by police.

Officers in Suzhou City said more than 220,000 gamblers on Chinese mainland were drawn to the illegal site.

They have arrested 30 suspects for allegedly operating three mainland branches of the registered overseas gambling group Fun88 and froze 110 million yuan in company accounts used to hold deposits and pay out winnings.

Fun88, mainly targeting Chinese customers across Asia, provides virtual gambling on lotteries, casinos and general sports events.

The three branches busted were run as its advertisement, technology, and financial departments on the mainland.

The gambling ring caught police's attention because one of the company's agents, Wang Tianbao, a 28-year-old driver, started to post advertisements for Fun88 on popular Chinese Internet forums beginning last October.

Wang was arrested on February 6 in his apartment. Police seized thousands of blank membership cards and high-tech gambling equipment.

Wang led police to bigger fish after they found an abnormal transaction of 80,000 yuan in his bank account a day after he was arrested.

"Through Webcams, it looks like dealers were interacting with Internet players but these were just pre-edited video clips," said an officer.
