Netizens accuse Red Cross of posting exaggerated expenses for earthquake relief
THE Red Cross Society of China has been criticized by netizens who claim that the charity is reporting an exaggerated expense for water it provided to quake-hit areas of Gansu Province.
The Red Cross yesterday reported on its microblog that Gansu Red Cross sent 1,900 boxes of bottled water worth a total of 194,400 yuan (US$31,675) to Minxian and Zhangxian counties, where 6.6-magnitude quake occurred on Monday.
Netizens checked photos posted online and pointed out that the brand of bottled water was much cheaper and that 1,900 boxes should have cost only about 53,200 yuan.
The Red Cross has not responded to the critics.
The earthquake left at least 95 dead and more than 1,000 injured.
