Netizens suspect shakedown as uninjured woman claims expat collided with her
AN expat was badgered by a Chinese woman into offering compensation this morning in Beijing after the woman accused him of knocking her over with his scooter, even though a medical exam showed she had no injuries.
China National Radio reported that the incident occurred at around 10:30am. The woman, with an accent from northeastern China, fell down when the expat was passing by on a scooter.
The young man stopped. He got down and lifted her up, but she grabbed his hands and claimed she was hit and her legs were injured. She asked the expat to accept responsibility for leaving her unable to walk, the report said.
It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not they actually collided. But the woman grabbed his clothes and tore them. Pictures posted online showed the cotton lining of the expat’s garments was showing.
Pictures also showed her sitting on his scooter, refusing to let him go.
The incident caused a traffic jam of more than an hour. While police were called, the woman fell down several times and insisted that the expat should accept the blame. The young man appeared to be so worried he had tears in his eyes, the report said.
Both the young man and woman were sent to a local hospital. A medical checkup showed the woman had no injuries, but she again sat on the ground and claimed she felt sick.
The young man gave her 1,800 yuan (US$295.38) to end the dispute.
A series of pictures of the incident have gone viral on the Internet and triggered heated discussions. Many Netizens said they suspected racketeering was involved because the woman was strong enough to tear the man’s outfit.
