Network smashed for selling sick and dead pigs
AN across-country crime network that sold pork from sick and dead pigs, totaling more than 100 million yuan (US$16 million) in earnings, has been busted, the Ministry of Public Security announced yesterday.
Police caught 110 suspects in 11 groups and 75 of them are facing criminal charges. Police also raided about 30 underground workshops and seized more than 1,000 tons of unsafe meat and 48 tons of lard made from pig carcasses.
The network was uncovered by police after they busted a group in Hunan Province in central China. Confessions made by the suspects led to the arrest of 10 other groups.
The 11 groups collaborated in the trafficking and sales of sick and dead pigs and bribed their way to food markets in 11 provinces, including Hunan, Henan and Guangxi, police said.
