New HIV cases increase, reach 513 in Hong Kong
A TOTAL of 513 new cases of HIV infections were recorded in Hong Kong last year, compared with 438 in 2011, the Department of Health announced yesterday.
Sexual contact remained the major mode of HIV transmission in Hong Kong last year, said doctor Wong Ka-hing, a consultant to the health department.
Of the 513 new cases, 254 people acquired the infection via homosexual or bisexual exposure and 126 via heterosexual contact. There were seven transmission cases due to drug injections, one case where a mother transmitted HIV to her newborn and one via blood or blood product transfusion outside Hong Kong. The routes of transmission of the remaining 124 cases had yet to be determined due to inadequate information.
In the fourth quarter of 2012, a total of 120 people - 93 males and 27 females - tested positive for HIV.
Since 1984, 5,783 HIV infections had been reported in Hong Kong.
Twenty-five new cases of AIDS were reported in the fourth quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of AIDS cases to 1,353 since 1985.
