New Metro checks necessary

A new round of quality inspection will be launched on a Metro line in south China after a whistleblower revealed the contractor concealed a negative inspection report.

The contractor of the northern extension of Metro Line 3 in Guangzhou hid an inspection report showing substandard compressive strength in the connecting passages, according to the initial investigation result reached by the Guangzhou Construction Commission, Beijing-based Jinghua Times reported today.

The new round of quality checks came after Zhong Jizhang, an engineer participating in the first round of quality inspection of the Metro line, disclosed in his blog that the compressive strength of the concrete structure in the connecting passages didn't meet designed requirements on August 30. The contractor, Beijing Chang Cheng Bilfinger Berger construction Engineering Co Ltd, refused to accept the report, Zhong said.

Guangzhou Construction Authority will ask the constructor, supervisor, designer and the metro company to hand over all construction materials and quality reports. An independent team of experts will analyse the reports and reach a final conclusion as to whether potential safety issues exist or any remedial measures need to be taken.

It didn's say whether the Metro Line 3 will open for a trial operation as scheduled on October 30, only emphasising the quality check of the Metro line hasn't finished yet.

A connecting passage is a corridor for the metro crew and an emergency escape route between the two metro tunnels. Possible consequences of substandard concrete structure could lead to the collapse of the passage, blockage of the draining system and others problems, experts say.
