New bridge collapses, 18 hurt
A SECTION of a newly built bridge collapsed on a wharf, leaving 18 tourists with minor injuries yesterday at Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi Province.
The incident occurred when too many tourists crowded onto the bridge, ignoring instructions from management staff, a publicity department official with the West Sea Tourism Zone Management Committee said.
The bridge had been in trial use since September 26 as it had not yet passed final inspections, according to a report.
The committee official declined to comment on that issue.
Most of the tourists were rescued within five minutes. They suffered slight bruises and had been sent to a hospital, the publicity department official said.
Some of the tourists lost mobile phones and cameras in the water. Officials said the committee had recorded the losses and will negotiate compensation with the tourists.
A large crowd of tourists arrived in the morning yesterday and the committee dispatched more staff to maintain order.
However, some tourists refused to listen to the staffers and crowded onto the bridge, causing it to collapse, the official said.
Lushan Mountain is one of the country’s five most famous peaks and has a waterfall.
