New bullet train runs rings round Hainan
A NEW stretch of track opened in south China’s Hainan Province yesterday, completing the world’s first high speed railway line to circle an island.
A bullet train set off from Haikou, capital of the island province, at 9:40am on the 345 kilometer western line which links six counties to join the eastern track in Sanya, a beach resort on the island’s southern coast.
The 308-kilometer eastern part of the line came into service at the end of 2010, linking Haikou to Sanya, with a designed speed of up to 250kph.
It passes Bo’ao, a scenic town that is the venue for the annual Boao Forum for Asia.
Construction of the western track began in September 2013 and cost 27 billion yuan (US$4.23 billion).
Xia Feng, assistant to the president of the China Institute for Reform and Development, said the new line could boost tourism in the western part of the island.
“The new line will offer travelers more choices, giving them easier access to the western part, which will boost development there,” Xia said.
Infrastructure in the west has lagged behind the rest of the island, he said. “There is a disparity between house prices in the east and those in the west,” he added. “So the line will create opportunities for real estate developers.”
