New dawn on city's computing capacity
A NEW China-made supercomputer named Dawning 5000A is expected to be installed in Shanghai in April, according to its developer in Tianjin.
The unit, with a peak capability of more than 200 trillion FLOPS (floating-point operations per second), will be used for information processing and scientific research at the Shanghai Supercomputer Center (SSC).
The announcement of its installation was made on Friday by Li Jun, president of Tianjin-based Dawning Information Industry Co.
Dawning 5000A will aid weather forecasting, seabed tunnel construction, environmental protection, large passenger aircraft production and earthquake predictions, according to the SSC.
The supercomputer will cost 200 million yuan (US$29 million), cover a floor space of 75 square meters, consume 700 kilowatts per hour and will be funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipal Government.
