New manned submersible is declared safe
China’s new manned submersible has passed a safety test and is being prepared for commissioning.
Shenhai Yongshi, or “deep sea warrior,” is able to reach a depth of 4,500 meters.
It was taken apart by a research institute of the China Shipbuilding
Industry Corporation to undergo a safety test by the China Classification Society, Tang Leiping, a senior engineer with the Shanghai branch of the CCS, said yesterday.
No safety risks were found.
“The CCS safety approval will allow the machine to be insured, take part in international activities and scientific exploration,” Tang said.
The submersible would complete an annual safety test after it was put into service, he said.
In October, Shenhai Yongshi was loaded on board the ship Tansuo-1 to conduct its first deep-sea testing mission off the shore of Sanya in southern Hainan Province.
Shenhai Yongshi’s development, led by the No. 702 Institute of CSIC, took eight years and involved more than 90 Chinese organizations and companies.
