New name, new head for kindergarten
A KINDERGARTEN that was closed after many of its children were killed in a minibus crash in northwest China's Gansu Province reopened yesterday under a different name and with new management.
A total of 205 children went to the new Yulinzi Township Kindergarten accompanied by family members yesterday. The former Xiaoboshi (Little Doctor) Kindergarten used to house 737 pupils, the Qingyang City government said on its website.
But there was no bus to take the children to kindergarten yesterday.
"It will be more convenient for us with a school bus, but we just want the school to make sure the safety of our children," said Li Youfang, who took his four-year-old grandson to the new school on his bicycle.
Twenty-one people -19 children, a teacher and the bus driver - were killed and 43 others were injured last Wednesday morning when a nine-seat school bus with 64 people on board collided head-on in foggy conditions with a truck in Yulinzi Township in the city of Qingyang.
The Xiaoboshi kindergarten was shut after the accident and prosecutors approved the arrest of its head.
The new kindergarten has hired 29 teachers, including a new head and three psychological counselors, the city government said.
Almost all the facilities, including desks, equipment and books are new, Hu Yan, one of the teachers told the China News Service.
A local oil company has presented a new 45-seat school bus to the kindergarten, but the school authority has yet to put it into service.
"There are 135 children who have yet to go to the new school, and local government will try the best to encourage them to come," the government said.
A new 10,000-square-meter site for the Yulinzi Township Kindergarten is in the planning stages, and is expected to open next autumn.
Meanwhile, the local government has paid 10,000 yuan (US$1,574) to the family of Yang Haijun, the driver of the minibus, to cover funeral expenses.
According to the government, each bereaved family is to receive up to 436,000 yuan in compensation after the children's bodies were buried.
