New oil tanker sinks on trial run in Wuhan

A 760-million-yuan (US$120 million) oil tanker sank on its maiden voyage last Saturday in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, it is reported today.

An official with the Shanghai Salvage Bureau said they received a request to salvage the ship around 4pm on January 14, the Beijing News reported today.

The oil tanker was built by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd for the China Oilfield Service Ltd (COSL).

An insider with the COSL said he was unaware of the mishap and the ship was supposed to be still under construction. The shipbuilder hasn't delivered the vessel to its customer, the report said.

Phone calls to the office of Wuchang Shipbuilding went unanswered, according to the report.
