New road for learner drivers
A PILOT program to allow people to sit their driving test without going to driving schools will be launched later this year, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.
Currently, it is mandatory for people to attend a driving school if they want to sit the test.
Under the pilot scheme they will be able to teach themselves or learn from a friend or relative. They will also be able to take the test in other cities.
The current system is designed to allow traffic authorities to control the number of new drivers hitting the roads, but there are claims it also encourages bribery.
In a recent case, Liang Zhixiong, former head of the vehicle administration department in Zhanjiang, a city of south China’s Guangdong Province, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for accepting more than 224,000 yuan in bribes. He was one of 39 people in the department who benefited from learners being asked to pay up to 700 yuan for test “insurance.”
