New rules allow lesbians to donate blood, gays not pleased
LESBIANS are allowed to donate blood under new rules made by the Ministry of Healthy, ending a 14-year ban. But gays are still prohibited, sparking a lively debate over discrimination.
The new regulations, effective from July 1, exclude drug addicts, gays and people with multi-sexual partners from being blood donors.
Gays are more likely than lesbians to contract and spread epidemic diseases, especially AIDS, because of their different ways of doing sex, Fu Qiang, Nanjing City Red Cross Blood Center in Jiangsu Province, told the Jinling Evening News.
Nearly 20 percent of gay men are virus carriers, the paper said.
According to the Nanjing Diseases Control and Prevention Center, more than half of the new HIV carriers diagnosed last year are gays.
The new rules also extended the donor age limit by five years to 60 and spelled out criminal punishment for those who donate blood in malicious revenge on the society.
