New rules for driving instruction
Beginning in April, new motorists will be able to learn how to drive without undergoing formal instruction — if they live in the right area.
Sixteen places have been selected for a pilot program that will allow residents to take the official road test without going to driving school, the Ministry of Public Security announced yesterday. They are: Tianjin, Baotou, Changchun, Nanjing, Ningbo, Ma’anshan, Fuzhou, Ji’an, Qingdao, Anyang, Wuhan, Nanning, Chengdu, Dali and Baoji, and Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture.
The ministry said that once people obtain a learning certificate, they can be taught to drive by a relative, friend or any other motorist with a clean record, providing they use a vehicle that meets government safety standards and stick to designated routes.
Once they are satisfied that they have gained the necessary skills, they can apply for a road test.
More than 30 million people take lessons every year and the demand for instruction is increasing, according to the ministry.
