New security bureau director
WANG Lijun has been appointed director of Chongqing Municipality's Public Security Bureau, the People's Congress Standing Committee of the municipality announced yesterday, China News Service reported today.
Wang became deputy Party secretary and deputy director of the bureau in June 2008. Since then, Wang has led a crackdown on crime, seizing guns and explosives and demolishing underground arms stores on the border of Chongqing Municipality and Guizhou Province.
Wang is heading the investigation into the masked gunman who, last Thursday, shot and killed a sentry outside a People's Liberation Army garrison in Chongqing and stole his weapon.
The 18-year-old guard, Han Junliang, was shot outside the PLA garrison in Chongqing's High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Han's semi-automatic rifle was taken after the attack.
Police have offered a 300,000-yuan (US$44,000) reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman and issued a description of the attacker, who was caught on camera. He is said to be about 1.7 meters tall and was wearing a grey jacket and a black hat. He was also carrying a knife.
The municipality is treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
