New storm threatens south coast

GALES and heavy rain are forecast over south China's Hainan and Guangdong provinces today, brought by a new tropical storm formed early yesterday north of Luzon of the Philippines.

The new storm, the 15th of the year, is yet to be named.

The Hainan Provincial Observatory forecast that it would arrive off Guangdong tonight, bringing strong winds and heavy rains to Hainan, which lies to the southwest of Guangdong, in the next three days.

Winds were gusting at up to 65 kilometers in the eye of the storm, and shipping owners have been warned to batten down the hatches.

The new storm follows tropical storm Mujigae, which left Hainan two days ago and forced the evacuation of nearly 50,000 people. Farms, roads and fish ponds were flooded.
