New strain of flu resistant to drug

HONG Kong's Department of Health's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch announced yesterday that it has detected a strain of swine flu virus resistant to Tamiflu medication.

A department spokesman said the virus was identified during routine tests.

"This is the ninth case of Tamiflu resistance to swine flu virus detected in Hong Kong," said the spokesman.

The virus was isolated from a specimen taken from a seven-year-old girl who had been suffering from fever, a sore throat, cough and runny nose.

She was admitted to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on February 2 and discharged the next day.

A sample taken from her tested positive for the HSI virus and was resistant to Tamiflu, though could be treated by the drug Relenza.

The spokesman said there was no evidence of further transmission of Tamiflu-resistant swine flu virus from the patient.

Officials said the case will be reported to the World Health Organization.
