New subway line to open in Beijing in 2012
BEIJING will open a new subway line by the end of 2012, municipal transportation authorities said today.
The first phase of Line 6, which will run through the city's central business district parallel to Line 1, will be 31 km long with 30 stations, according to Zhang Chengman, a spokesman for Beijing Railway Construction and Management Co., Ltd.
The line will operate on a trial basis in September and go into full service before the end of the year, Zhang said.
The line is expected to relieve passenger pressure on the crowded Line 1.
