New technology spelling an end to spam

Portable devices able to track senders of spam and automatic short message filters were among new technologies in the fight against unwanted messages and calls that featured at a security event in Shanghai yesterday.
Around 100 firms, including Chinese telecom carriers, Internet giants and security companies attended China Cybersecurity Week.
At its booth, China Mobile revealed it had shut down more than 8,600 spam sending devices, or 鈥渋llegal base stations,鈥 nationwide this year.
Shanghai Mobile, the local branch of the China鈥檚 biggest mobile carrier, has established a special team to crack down on spam messages and calls.
Carriers, including China Mobile and China Telecom, have also developed filters which automatically warn users of mobile devices if messages or calls contain 鈥渟uspicious鈥 content.
The system, which shares a database with online firms including 360 and Tencent, doesn鈥檛 require users to install special security applications.
Tomorrow is the final day of the annual national security event which is being held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).
