New tiger photos remind people of 2007 fraud

A TOURIST caught the sight of a big cat in the remote Sanqing Mountain, Jiangxi Province, with his camera and experts said it looked like the extinct South China tiger. But many netizens compared it to a fraud by a farmer three years ago.

Bao Shuguang from Anhui Province was traveling in Sanqing Mountain on October 15 when he spotted a 2-meter-long animal with brownish hair. He took four pictures and showed them to local forestry management which consulted experts at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.

The experts thought the animal looked similar to the South China tiger which had not been sighted for years, China News Service reported today.

The buzz over the comeback of the extinct South China tiger reminded people of Zhou Zhenglong who forged South China tiger photos in 2007 to win a reward from Shaanxi government and was later convicted of fraud.

The Sanqing Mountain management has contacted Jiangxi Province Wildlife Protection Bureau to explore the area.
Other areas in the province also reported traces of tigers but they were never confirmed by the authority.
