Newborn boy is stolen from hospital

A 13-DAY-OLD boy has been stolen from an intensive care unit by a mystery woman in Chengdu City, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Local police have started an investigation after the theft of the baby from Wuhou District No. 5 People's Hospital, today's Chengdu Business Daily reported.

The hospital admitted its error in failing to double-check the woman's identity before she took the baby, who had been adopted by a couple from Pengzhou City after his birth to a poor Yibing City couple.

Though no one except medical staff was allowed into the ICU wards, adoptive father Dong Zexing and his wife He Xiuqing, 39, visited the hospital every day to see their son through the ward's glass window.

The baby's doctor Chen Zemin told the newspaper that the woman appeared to know the baby very well, and promised to bring him back after showing the boy to his dying grandfather.

Chen let her take the baby after she paid 500 yuan (US$73.24) for the baby's medical costs.
