Newborn girl dies after father dumps her

A BABY girl died after being dumped by her father in a park near a south China hospital the day she was born.

Police are hunting the man who disappeared after dumping her, the girl's mother told today's Guangzhou Daily.

The girl was born on Tuesday in Dongguan City's Qingxi Hospital. She was very weak because she was born after six-month pregnancy and had deformities. She weighed only 0.85 kilograms at birth, with a section of intestine growing outside her body.

Her father took her away from the hospitalized mother, telling her that he was taking the baby home.

Then she was found in a park near the hospital later that night, eaten by ants.

Passers-by sent her back to the hospital but she died hours later.

Her mother told the newspaper that the family was poor, living on the father's monthly income of 1,000 yuan (US$146) a month.
