Newspaper bureau chief sentenced for blackmail
A NEWSPAPER bureau chief in Shaanxi Province was sentenced to six years in jail after he ordered his reporters to extort 656,000 yuan (US$98,794) from local government departments by threatening to write negative stories.
The 42-year-old Jiang Yanbo, who was the Shaanxi bureau chief for Beijing-based Farmers Daily, was accused of ordering journalists to ask for what he claimed "advertising fees" from 12 government departments in Ankang City between 2007 to 2009.
The money was confiscated and Jiang was fined 100,000 yuan by the Chaoyang District People's Court in Beijing, reported Beijing News today.
Jiang was also accused of embezzlement, the court said.
The defendant said he will appeal against the sentence.
