Newspaper chief loses appeal case
A COURT in south China’s Guangdong Province has upheld a ruling by a lower court in the case of a former head of a local newspaper who was jailed for 11 years for graft.
Guangdong Provincial Higher People’s Court announced it rejected an appeal by Dai Yuqing, former head of Guangzhou Daily.
In December last year, the Dongguan Intermediate People’s Court in the province, found that Dai had taken bribes totaling 2.47 million yuan (US$370,000) when he was president of Guangzhou Daily and chairman of the board for the Guangzhou Daily Newspaper Group and an affiliated company from 2006 to 2012.
Dai was found to have accepted bribes from his subordinates and local hospitals in exchange for promotions and other personnel decisions and advertisements.
Dai returned 1.25 million yuan before his trial but the court also confiscated 500,000 yuan in personal assets.
