Newspaper man jailed for graft

THE former editor-in-chief of a ministry's official newspaper was yesterday sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment for corruption.

Liu Yunzhou, 64, the ex-chief of the Ministry of Land and Resources publication, was convicted of accepting bribes of more than 2.37 million yuan (US$372,564) at Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

These bribes had been paid since 1997 to help others obtain land-use rights, Procuratorial Daily reported.

Liu's family urged him to "be strong," after the verdict was announced, but he appeared very calm, making no comment, the report said.

At an earlier hearing, Liu made no attempt to plead for a light punishment, reported the Beijing Morning Post.

Liu is reported to have said: "I deserve to be jailed for my sins."

Liu's crimes came to light in 2010, two years after he had retired.

In March this year, Liu was put into "double designation" - a special investigative procedure for Party officials, under which they are required to confess or explain wrongdoings at a designated time and place, 21st Century Business Herald reported earlier.
