Nigerian diplomats identify man who died after China street fight

The identity of the Nigerian who died suddenly at a police station in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province while he was kept for investigation over a fare dispute on June 18 has been confirmed, local government said.

Officials from the Nigerian Embassy in China checked the man's body and confirmed his identity on June 21. They will consult with the man's family about whether to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of his death, Xinhua News Agency said today.

Guangzhou police have noticed the Nigerian Embassy to ask his family to come to Guangzhou to help with their investigation.

The man took the service of an electric bike cabbie surnamed Sun on June 18. When they reached the destination in Yuexiu District, the two fought in the street over the fare.

After they were brought to a police station nearby, the Nigerian suddenly fell into a coma and died despite rescue treatment.

His sudden death led to a protest by local foreigners outside the police station and their rally caused traffic jams. The crowd later dispersed through police persuasion.

Another foreigner who took the bike cab with the Nigerian, the bike cabbie surnamed Sun and two other Chinese who joined in the fight are all detained for investigation.
