Nightclub manager jailed over prostitution
A MANAGER at Beijing's Heaven on Earth nightclub has been jailed for four years for organizing prostitution.
Sun Lixia, 24, vice general manager at the nightclub, was found to have arranged for escort girls to provide sex services, China News Service reported yesterday, citing Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court.
The court heard that Sun arranged prostitution services on four occasions, earning 6,500 yuan (US$1,026) from the illegal business.
Sun charged the clients 3,000 to 5,000 yuan each time, the court said.
The three prostitutes she recruited were all escort girls at the nightclub, and Sun pocketed 30 to 50 percent of their illegal income, it said.
Sun confessed she earned 6,500 yuan in total from the deals, but pled not guilty, saying she was "matchmaking," not "pandering," the court said.
In a crackdown against prostitution, gambling and drugs in May last year, Beijing police seized 557 escort girls from four nightclubs.
The venues were said to have provided obscene shows and to be shelters for prostitution. Sun's activities were uncovered during the investigation.
The Heaven on Earth club, said to be popular among Chinese middle and high-level officials and businessmen, boasted of escort girls from famous universities and art colleges.
Zhang Jingli, a former deputy director of the State Food and Drug Administration, stood trial for taking bribes of more than 1.17 million yuan in Beijing last month.
Zhang was accused of living a "decadent life" in January when he was formally arrested. He was caught on video in steamy scenes at the Heaven on Earth club.
