Nine held after stampede for gifts

POLICE have detained nine people and are seeking another after a stampede at a promotional event on Sunday that left two dead and 11 injured in southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality, the local public security bureau said yesterday.

The nine were Liao Weiming, legal representative of the Liaofeng Electronics Co Ltd; his wife, brother and brother-in-law; a temporary worker Liao hired and four staff at the hotel where the incident occurred, said the police from the public security bureau's Fuling branch.

The nine organized a health care products event, and large crowds trying to get gifts led to the stampede. Xu Dianhong, of the Tibet Lhasa Xuefeng Natural Medicinal Materials Development Co Ltd, remains at large.

Police said the organizers had not sought permission to hold the event, as required by police and the local industrial and commerce authorities.

The event was being held in the second-floor dining-room of Zhongshan Hotel.

The dead were named as Fuling residents Zhang Shumei and Luo Jianying.
