Nine workers die after lightning strike
NINE workers died and three were injured while burying detonators in a thunderstorm in southwestern China's Yunnan Province yesterday, China News Service reported today.
The workers, mostly local villagers, were packing explosives into place to repair a road and were covering them with earth when a storm hit in Zhenxiong County of the southwest China province.
A crack of thunder was heard around 5pm followed by the explosion that sent rock and earth flying up to 100 meters. The report said the lighting set off the detonators.
Nine workers disappeared, with only bits of cloth and human tissue remaining after the dust had settled a few minutes later, and three others were slightly injured, the county government confirmed in the report.
