Ningbo probes ship collision, 8 still missing

A Panama-registered freighter was being investigated in Ningbo, a port city in east China's Zhejiang Province yesterday after it collided with a Chinese fishing boat early on Friday. The incident left eight fishermen missing, local authorities said.
The Southern Wallaby, which belongs to Japan's Tatsumi Marine Co Ltd, arrived at Ningbo Port at 2pm yesterday for investigation, a Ningbo immigration department official said.
There were 20 sailors on the foreign freighter, including two South Koreans and 18 Filipinos. They were all in good condition, the official said.
"Because the freighter is big in tonnage and was fully loaded at the time, it suffered no damage in the collision, but the Chinese fishing boat capsized and the eight fishermen are all missing," he said.
The freighter, built in 2003, is 123.5 meters long and 20.2 meters wide. It left Singapore on March 5 and was heading for Rizhao, a port city in east China's Shandong Province, with a cargo of 11,951 tons of palm oil, he said.
Rescuers are still searching for the missing victims in the sea. Due to strong winds in the area, a helicopter search had to be postponed yesterday, according to the Zhejiang Maritime Rescue Center.
The collision occurred about 1am on Friday in the East China Sea off the coast of Ningbo. The fishing boat was registered in Zhejiang Province.
