Ningbo program aims to spare offenders jail
WANG Zuo's performance as a traffic assistant in downtown Ningbo, a city in Zhejiang Province, could spare him a jail sentence despite his involvement in a traffic accident three months ago in which a woman died.
He is one of 13 people benefiting from Ningbo's pilot program of "community service for jail time," yesterday's Legal Weekly reported.
Wang, a driver, has repeatedly apologized to the victim's family and paid more than 600,000 yuan (US$88,584) in compensation.
The Beilun District People's Procuratorate Office ordered him to serve in the community before deciding on his fate, based on his performance.
"I do like this new assignment," Wang said. "It gives me a good chance to make up for the guilt I feel." His boss had agreed to keep his driver's job open for him.
