Nissan's 5-bln-yuan plant starts operation

THE fourth plant of Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, a joint venture between Japanese automaker Nissan and its Chinese counterpart Dongfeng Motors Corporation, was put into operation on Saturday in the northeastern port city of Dalian.

The plant, with an investment of 5 billion yuan (US$813 million) and an annual production capacity of 150,000 automobiles, will focus on the production of SUV, according to Ren Yong, deputy general manager of the joint venture.

The first product to hit the market will be its X-Trail-branded SUV, he said.

The plant, which began construction in June 2012, will double its annual production capacity when its second-phase construction is completed. Ren did not elaborate when the second-phase project would be finished.

Dongfeng Nissan has another three plants in Guangzhou, Xiangyang and Zhengzhou.The company's four factories are expected to produce more than 1.5 million vehicles annually by 2015.
