'No force used' on Vietnamese fishermen
CHINA yesterday denied media reports accusing it of using force to expel Vietnamese fishermen illegally fishing in sea areas off the Xisha Islands.
The state-controlled Vietnam News reported on Thursday that China had used force to threaten 11 Vietnamese fishermen on February 22, preventing them from entering the Xisha Islands to avoid a storm. It said Chinese forces assaulted the fishermen and tried to take their property.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said no force was used in the illegal fishing incident.
"Recently, in the seas around the Xisha Islands, China legally dealt with illegal Vietnamese fishing activities, and expelled them from the area, which is completely proper and legal," he told reporters at a daily news briefing.
"What should be stressed is that China did not use force in carrying out the law, and did not board the Vietnamese ships. Relevant reports do not accord with the fact."
China has always dealt with Vietnamese fishermen in a humanitarian way and provided help to them when needed, something Vietnam appreciated, Hong added.
Hong reaffirmed that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Xisha Islands and its adjacent waters.
"We demand Vietnam earnestly respect China's sovereignty and take effective measures to strengthen the education and management of their fishermen and stop illegal fishing to maintain the overall development of Sino-Vietnamese ties."
