Noise 鈥榳ar鈥 heats up between residents in Wenzhou City
A powerful loudspeaker system worth 260,000 yuan (US$41,850) has brought the “war” between residents and outdoor dancers to a new level.
About 600 families living in a complex in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province chipped in to raise money for a sound system, hoping to disturb the large numbers of middle-aged dancers who exercise day and night in the compound’s main square.
The sound system with six loud speakers now broadcasts warnings to the dancers. The ploy worked initially. Some of the dancers gave up their hobby because they could no longer tolerate the loud warnings. And the affected residents also complained that the noise disturbance had already caused property prices in the area to drop.
One family said they sent their son to live in a relative’s home because he needed a quiet environment to concentrate on his upcoming national college entrance exam.
But the “noise against noise” war is also drawing criticism from other people living nearby.
“I am nearly 80 years old. Every afternoon, I walk past the square. I don’t think the dance music is too noisy. But instead, that tool (loudspeaker system) is causing us great pain,” a resident, surnamed Jin, told the local media.
The city’s environmental watchdog said yesterday it had begun an investigation to evaluate the level of noise the system created.
