Noodle maker recalls products over acid levels
A JOINT venture company that sells instant noodles has recalled some of its products that were found to contain high levels of acid, which may cause vomiting, diarrhea or liver damage, it said yesterday afternoon.
Jinmailang Nissin Food Co Ltd said the instant noodles which contained acid were all produced in its factory in Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. The noodles were only sold in Yuncheng and Sanmenxia City in the central Henan Province, the company said.
According to the Henan Industrial and Commercial Administration Bureau, the company's three top-selling products are involved, including Konno Ramen and Yiyuanwang spicy beef flavored noodles.
Industry insiders suspect the company may have purchased inferior oil with high levels of acid to cut costs or fried the noodles with old oil for a long time, both of which lead to excessive acidity.
Jinmailang said it has applied to the national authorities for another check.
But the Henan industrial and commercial watchdog said Jinmailang did not file the application within five days after it was informed of the problem, which means it has given up the right to have a double check, Beijing Times reported yesterday.
A total of 211 boxes of instant noodles have been seized and the dealers have been punished, Sanmenxia authorities said.
Jinmailang said it would publish more details about the case next week.
Fans of the company's products went online to express dismay at the news and called for a boycott of its products.
The Shanghai market hasn't been affected as all Jinmailang products on local shelves passed tests.
The products on sale in Shanghai were made in Jiaxing City in east China's Zhejiang Province.
Still, the NGS supermarket chain in Shanghai wasn't taking any chances. It stopped selling Jinmailang products.
