Noodles recalled by Taiwan producer
TAIWAN-BASED food conglomerate Uni-President has withdrawn 19 lines of instant noodles after one of its suppliers became entangled in a tainted oil scandal.
The leading instant noodle producer said supplier Tongqing Co Ltd bought 5.5 tons of beef suet in June from a subsidiary of food giant Ting Hsin International Group.
Ting Hsin is at the center of a food scandal after two of its subsidiaries were found to have labelled oil intended for animal feed as edible oil whe n importing it from Vietnam.
As a result, Uni-President decided to recall 19 products, including 17 lines of beef noodles, the Beijing Times reported.
A refund system is in place.
The noodles on the recall list have never been sold on the Chinese mainland and the tainted cooking oil has never been used on the mainland, Uni-President said.
But some of the withdrawn products have been found for sale on Tmall.com, the largest online business-to-consumer site in China, the newspaper reported.
Some 7.7 tons of suet from Tongqing was also supplied to more than 20 bakeries in Taiwan, local media reported.
