Nosebleeds blamed on fumes

Paint fumes and toxic emissions from chemical plants were blamed for the nosebleeds sustained by 19 students last Thursday in Yueqing City, Zhejiang Province, China News Service reported yesterday.

The city’s environmental protection authorities detected excessive levels of acid mist emitted by an electroplating company near the new campus of Beibaixiang Town No. 9 Primary School.

Benzene and methylbenzene were also detected in painted steel frames and abandoned paint buckets at the school, the report said.

Students had symptoms such as vomiting, headache and difficulties breathing at school on Thursday morning.

They were sent to a hospital and the school was closed. The students have since recovered and classes will resume today at the school’s old campus, local education authorities said.

Environmental protection authorities inspected the school and the surrounding area for emissions.

They found 34 unlicensed factories around the school’s new campus. Three other factories failed to meet exhaust emission standards, according to Wenzhou City News.

The report didn’t specify how the factories would be punished.

Environmental protection authorities also found 12 unlicensed companies emitting pollutants near the school’s old campus.

Two of these were suspended from operating, the report said.

Authorities added that they would continue to investigate to determine the exact source of the pollutants.
